The ruling party Bangladesh Awami League (AL) is conducting meeting one after another to determine what to do in order to tackle this ongoing unrest.
The AL President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina; AL General Secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader presided over the meeting.
In these meetings, the situation arising after the ongoing quota reform movement and what to do now were discussed. When the quota reform movement led by the general students turned into a conflict, the AL's organizational weaknesses as a party were exposed. Meanwhile, at that time, many AL leaders were not found in the field to face the movement.
These issues have come up in the analysis and review of the situation in a series of meetings. A branch of suggestions are also coming about identifying the weaknesses of the team in the series meeting and taking a strong position in the process later.
After a break of several days, students protested in several campuses of the country yesterday. They demanded a fair investigation into the killings of those murdered in the movement and trial of those responsible. At the same time, they demanded the release of the detained students.
Meanwhile, AL policymakers are not taking the ongoing situation lightly. They are reviewing everything and taking advice from party leaders as well as political allies to decide what to do.
AL President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina held a meeting with the top leaders of the central 14-party alliance at her official residence Ganobhaban yesterday afternoon.
The meeting started at 5:30 pm at Ganabhaban and ended after 8 pm. After the meeting, AL General Secretary Obaidul Quader told reporters that the top leaders of the 14-party alliance agreed to ban the politics of Jamaat-Shibir.
Besides, there is an important meeting of AL even today. That is the joint meeting of the AL leaders with the presidents and general secretaries of Dhaka metropolitan north, south and Dhaka district AL and all associate organizations. The meeting is scheduled to be held at the AL central office at 23, Bangabandhu Avenue at 11:00am. AL General Secretary Obaidul Quader will preside over the meeting.
This information was given in a message signed by AL Office Secretary Barrister Biplob Barua. Along with the government, the AL as a party is also taking organizational preparations to deal with the situation.
Earlier on July 25, the AL held a coordination meeting at the district AL office in Tejgaon, Dhaka. AL General Secretary Obaidul Quader presided over the meeting. Jubo League General Secretary Mainul Hossain Khan and Dhaka Metropolitan North AL General Secretary SM Mannan were involved in an argument over the party's weakness and failure to prevent violence during the quota reform movement. At one point, there was a push between one another. The coordination meeting was interrupted. Later, senior leaders calmed the situation.
On that day, a view-exchange meeting was held with the leaders of three thanas and wards of Dhaka-13 constituency under the metropolitan north AL at a community center from afternoon to 8:30 pm. At the meeting, 27 out of 108 unit committees of Mohammadpur, Adabar and Sher-e-Bangla Nagar of Dhaka Metropolitan North AL were dissolved for not participating in the violence prevention program surrounding the quota reform movement.
This correspondent of The Daily Post talked to AL Advisory Council member and former Vice-Chancellor of Rajshahi University (RU) Dr Abdul Khaleque.
He said 90 percent of university students want to be employees. Of the remaining 10 percent, some are businessmen, some want to earn a living through politicians or otherwise. If the field of employment cannot be expanded in the country, it will be difficult to stop the unrest of the students.
He also said that since the quota reform movement is related to government jobs, that is why the quota reform movement has become so acceptable and popular among the general students. If the problems are not solved in terms of reality, these unpleasant incidents will continue to be repeated.
The veteran educationist and politician also thinks that the government's dialogue with the protesting teachers of the university is very important at this time. An worthy solution through dialogue is also desirable. On the other hand, there is no student union in the public university at the moment. Therefore, if the Prime Minister can arrange an exchange of views with the representatives of the general students and the parents / guardians of the students who led the movement, good results will be obtained.
Yusuf Hossain Humayun, a member of the AL Advisory Council, was asked by this reporter of The Daily Post what his advice for the party is in the emerging situation.
In response, he said that no formal meeting was called by the party, it may be called; then advice will be given. However, he personally regretted that he could not even think of such slogans (Ami Ka? Tumi Ka? Razakar, Razakar) in Dhaka University, which is the birthplace of the mass upsurge of 1969. It's very sad. As a freedom fighter, as an associate of the Liberation War, what can be more sad, the veteran politician questioned.
