Flood situation worsen in north

The people of the eastern region (Comilla, Feni, Noakhali, Laxmipur) are still suffering from the flood. Repairing their houses is now a big challenge due to lack of money. In the meantime, flood risk has appeared in three more upazilas in the south of Comilla district. Volunteers still have to distribute relief in different areas of Feni. Even as voluntary organizations were making preparations for post-flood rehabilitation in the region, the flood situation was deteriorating. However, although relief distribution activities have not yet started in the northern region, the flood situation is gradually deteriorating. Among them, the condition of Sherpur district is dire. According to the news received till yesterday, the death toll has increased to seven in different areas of the district. 242 primary schools are closed.

The existing road communication system between one area and another area has also been cut off. Incessant rains and landslides from upstream India have caused flooding in 30 unions of five upazilas of Sherpur. Incessant rains since last Thursday night caused flooding in the district. Several river banks have been broken. More than two hundred villages have been flooded due to landslides. About one and a half lakh people are trapped in water. The number of people stuck in water is increasing by the hour. In addition to the local administration, voluntary organizations and many organizations outside Sherpur are working to rescue people trapped in water. The local administration has declared all educational institutions in Jhenaigati and Nalitabari upazilas of the district as shelters.

The number of primary schools in the district is 741. Among them, 301 schools have been affected by floods. Among them, 242 primary schools have been declared closed. And 59 primary schools are being used as shelters. Nalitabari upazila has been affected by floods. 12 unions of the upazila have been flooded. Out of 121 primary schools in the upazila, 119 are closed. Sherpur District Primary Education Officer Md Obaidullah said that flood is a natural disaster. We have no hands here. Primary schools that have been flooded have been declared closed. If the water does not rise inside the school, the education program will continue normally.

The flood situation is gradually deteriorating in Netrakona district as well. And because of this, 186 government primary schools in Netrakona have been declared closed. Netrakona District Education Office made this announcement yesterday afternoon. Assistant District Primary Education Officer Mohammad Imdadul Haque confirmed the matter and said that the class activities of the school have been stopped. As the situation has gone out of control, school classes have been ordered to be suspended. The water level of all the main rivers of Netrakona is increasing due to the continuous rains of the last few days and the mountain streams coming down from the upstream. Meanwhile, the water of Kangsa River is flowing 15 cm above the danger level at Jaria Point in the district.

 New areas along the river banks are getting flooded. So far, low areas of Durgapur, Purbadhala and Kalmakanda upazilas of the district have been flooded. Water has entered the houses of at least 25 thousand people in about 25 villages. As a result, they are trapped in water. Various roads and educational institutions of the area have also been flooded.

In this situation, the water-bound people are facing shortage of food and clean water. According to the relevant sources, Dhalamulgaon, Jaria Union, Durgapur Upazila Kullagarh, Gaonkandia, Chandigarh, Kakairgarh and Kalmakanda Upazila Rangchati, Lengura, Kharnai were inundated due to flooding and the residents of those areas are trapped in water. Apart from this, several mud houses were destroyed in the border area of ​​Kalmakanda upazila due to heavy landslides.

Meanwhile, the District Water Development Board (BWDB) said that the water level continues to rise at five points in the four rivers of the district namely Someshwari, Kangs, Ubdhakhali and Dhanu. Among them, the water of the river Kansa is flowing 15 cm above the danger level. Executive Engineer of Netrakona Water Board Sarwar Jahan said that water of Someswari river was 311 cm below danger level at Bijaypur point, 27 cm of danger level at Durgapur point, 5 cm of danger level at Kalmakanda point of Ubdhakhali river and 195 cm of danger level at Khaliajuri point and water of Kangsa river was flowing at Jaria point till 12 noon yesterday.

It was blowing 15 cm above the danger limit. Meanwhile, there has been an erosion of the Brahmaputra River city protection dam in Jamalpur's old Ferry Ghat area. Because of this, Jamalpur-Mymensingh highway, Jamalpur crematorium, Brahmaputra River Bridge, many structures including homesteads are under threat of demolition. If the erosion repair work is not started soon, the Sherpur-Jamalpur road connection may be cut off, the local residents said. Around 20 meters of soil collapsed along with the CC block of the dam in the old Ferighat area yesterday afternoon.

A huge hole has been created. Erosion has occurred at the base of the bridge pillar. The fracture site is further cracked. Local people have surrounded the place of erosion with bamboo. Walking over the embankment is also prohibited. A person named Shakil's residence is under threat. Shafiqul Islam, a resident of Ferighat area, said that a few days ago, a small hole was formed after rainwater entered the dam. Every day the dam is slowly collapsing in rain water. If it rains like this, the local people fear that the whole dam will collapse.
