Proposal to extend age limit for govt jobs

#Spreading hope to the youth

#'No' proposal during the autocracy AL

#Green signal on siege, mass hunger strike

# A hope for job seekers

 # Retirement age is 65, many  are angry

The cabinet department has proposed fixing the age limit for entry into government service at 35 years and retirement age at 65 years. This information was informed yesterday in a letter sent from the General Directorate of the Cabinet Division.

It is said, "The letter received from the Bangladesh Administrative Service Association is sent herewith for the purpose of raising the age limit for entry into government service to 35 years and retirement age to 65 years."

In this letter, it is said, "As the scope of work of the Ministry of Public Administration is involved with the mentioned matter, it is requested to take necessary measures."

The job seekers blocked the Shahbag intersection of the capital last week with this demand. Hundreds of job aspirants gathered at Shahbag intersection and started protesting on September 7 at noon. Traffic stopped at this important intersection of the city.

In response to this demand, sit-in, siege, mass hunger strike etc programs were held at various times. During the autocratic Awami League government, it was discussed in the parliament. At that time Public Administration Minister Farhad Hossain said that the government has no plan to set the age limit for entering government service at 35 years. He said in Parliament on July 3 this year, if the age limit for entering the job is increased, the number of job seekers will increase at a large rate against various posts. As a result, there may be more competition in recruitment. This may cause frustration among candidates below 30 years of age.

He said, currently there is no session congestion in educational institutions. Earlier there was a big session jam in various educational institutions including universities, but now there is no significant session jam. Students obtain Master's degree in 16 years with SSC in 23/24 years. As the upper age limit for entering the job is 30 years, they get at least 6 to 7 years to apply for a job even after obtaining a master's degree. Besides, if a candidate applies within the age limit of 30 years, it takes 2/1 year to complete the recruitment process. As a result, the demand to raise the minimum age for joining the service from 30 years to 35 years actually comes close to that.

The minister said that according to the age and gender wise statistics of the candidates who passed the 43rd BCS examination, the number of recommended candidates in the younger age group (23-25) is the highest (37.68 percent) and the number of recommended candidates in the older age group (above 29) is the least 1.71 percent ).

He said that as the retirement age limit has been increased from 57 years to 59 years, the number of vacancies has naturally decreased. In this context, if the age limit for entering the job is increased, the number of job aspirants for different positions will increase at a large rate. Considering these students, there is no plan to increase the age limit for entering government jobs to 35 years.

However, after the fall of the Awami League government, initiatives were taken in this regard within less than a month and a half of the formation of the Interwarti government. This initiative will surely inspire hope among the 35-year-olds.

An activist named Mutasim Billah said, "Alhamdulillah, in the context of our movement, there has been a proposal to increase the age of employment to 35." We will remain agitating until it is gazetted. But there is some confusion about the age limit of OBS, there are questions, we don't want to raise questions about 65 as an entry point has been opened for now.

Bangladesh Supreme Court lawyer Hasanul Banna said, I oppose the proposal to increase the age limit for entry into government service to 35 and the retirement age to 65. I think considering the population of Bangladesh the age limit for entry into employment should be lifted or it can be increased to 40/45 years. There will be an opportunity to fulfill the desire to do government jobs at any stage of life. The state will be saved from wasting talent, labor, money and time. Considering the current unemployment rate, I think raising the retirement age is a fatal decision. Retirement age can be increased only after ensuring 100% employment.
