Ten popa fish caught in the net of Abdul Gani in Teknaf's St Martin's have been sold for Tk 7 lakh. A trader in Teknaf bought the fish. Abdul Gani confirmed the matter on Monday night. "I sold 10 fish to a trader in Teknaf for Tk 7 lakh. Each of the fish weighed 12 to 20 kg. I asked for Tk 20 lakh at first. But with so much money, no one wanted to buy it, so I finally gave it up for Tk 7 lakh.
Earlier on Monday morning, the fish were caught in the 'FB Gani' fishing trawler owned by Abdul Gani, a resident of St. Martin's West Para. When the trawler reached St. Martin's Jetty Ghat in the morning, a crowd gathered to see the fish. Fish importers and exporters said that the air sacs of male species of black popa fish are thick and large. There is a huge demand for this fish in different countries as special types of surgical yarn can be made from the air pouch of popa fish. That's why the price of male black popa fish is so high.
