129 jail sentences in 7 days

129 fishermen have been sentenced to imprisonment in seven days for the offense of catching hilsa in various rivers of Barisal division in violation of the ban. In addition, a fine of 11 lakh 99 thousand 100 taka was collected.

According to the information received from the Divisional Fisheries Office, 834 raids were conducted in Barisal Division from October 13 to October 19 midnight. Besides conducting 270 mobile courts, 311 cases have been filed.

At that time, the officers of the district and upazila offices of the Directorate of Fisheries visited 168 times different fish landing centers, 1 thousand 265 times different fish ghats, 2 thousand 341 times different fish farms and 1 thousand 370 times different markets in Barisal division. And 7 thousand 300 kg of hilsa was seized in the last two days' operation. In addition, 38 lakh 75 thousand 100 meters of illegal net worth Tk 7 crore 14 lakh 74 thousand 600 have been seized. Apart from this, Tk 1 lakh 5 thousand 200 was earned by auctioning the seized equipment including boats.

Nripendra Nath Biswas, Deputy Director of Fisheries Department, said that for 22 days from midnight on October 13, hilsa extraction, transportation and marketing will be prohibited across the country, including the main breeding ground of seven thousand square kilometers of the coast. During this ban, 7,996 metric tons of rice will be given to 3,19,830 fishermen in six districts of Barisal division.
