130 people have been abducted from different areas of Teknaf Upazila of Cox's Bazar in the last year. Police said that these abductions took place for dominating the area and demanding ransom.
It was known that 57 are residents, and the rest are Rohingya citizens. At least 100 of the abducted victims have been released after paying ransom, according to the families of the victims. About 20 kidnappers have been arrested in connection with the kidnapping.
Due to the increase in kidnappings in this area, Teknaf Upazila Community Policing Forum organized a crime prevention meeting at Rangikhali Kamil Madrasha ground of Hnila Union on April 3 afternoon. Teknaf Upazila Community Policing Forum President Md Alam Bahadur presided over it.
Cox's Bazar District Superintendent of Police Mahfuzul Islam spoke the meeting as the chief guest. Besides, Additional Superintendent of Police Rafiqul Islam and Teknaf Model Police Station officer-in-charge (OC) Osman Gani spoke. UP chairmans, members, political and community policing leaders, and women leaders attended the meeting.
The chief guest said that the police alone can't prevent kidnapping. People should also be aware of this. And if everyone works together to prevent crime, it is possible to prevent crime.
Hnila UP Chairman Rashed Mahmud Ali confirmed this and said that Rohingya terrorists have been kidnapping residents for a long time for ransom. After the abduction, they were beaten and tortured, and video messages were sent to the family for ransom. The kidnappers threatened to kill the abductees if they did not pay the ransom. Residents are in fear of these incidents.
