The upazila administration imposed section 144 in Sagarkandi union of Sujanagar upazila as two groups of BNP called for a rally at the same time in Pabna. Section 144 was imposed at four possible places in the union yesterday morning.
Sujanagar Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Mir Rasheduzzaman Rashed said Section 144 was imposed in Sagirkandi Bazar, Khalilpur, Shyamganj and Talimnagar from 12:00pm to 12:00am.
It was known that two groups led by Abdus Salam Mollah, member of the convening committee of the upazila BNP and Tariqul Islam, organizing secretary of the proposed Sagarkandi Union Juba Dal, called the rally in Sagirkandi Bazar. As a result, there was tension arise.
After the fall of the Awami League government, there have been several incidents of fighting between these two groups. Among them, Abdus Salam Mollah is in politics with Krishak Dal central president agriculturist Hasan Hasan Jafir Tuhin and Tariqul Islam is a former MP of Pabna-2 constituency Selim Reza Habib.
UNO Mir Rasheduzzaman Rashed said, "We do not know whether BNP is there, but we have come to know that two parties have called a rally there. There was a clash two days ago. It is not known who called the rally. They did not inform the police station as per the rules. So there is a complication locally. Section 144 has been imposed there as there is a threat to public safety."
Tariqul Islam, organizing secretary of the proposed Sagarkandi Union Jubo Dal, said, "We called the rally a few days ago after informing the administration demanding withdrawal of all false cases against BNP's acting chairman Tarique Rahman and stopping extortion in the area. But the administration has imposed Section 144."
However, Abdus Salam Mollah, a member of the convening committee of the upazila BNP, claimed, "We were informing the police station earlier. Then they called a meeting. Now the administration has imposed Section 144."
