Due to huge production of turmeric cultivation even after overcoming various adversities, farmers are passing busy time in the fields by spraying fertilizers, pesticides in Paikgachha of Khulna.
According to the Upazila Agriculture Department, turmeric is being cultivated on 130 hectares of land in the upazila this season. Of the 10 unions of the upazila, four unions including Gadaipur, Haridhali, Kapilmuni and Rauli are mostly cultivated. Turmeric has been cultivated in high lands and light shaded lands in different villages of these unions.Turmeric cultivation is good in high land and light shaded places. Turmeric seeds are sown from Baishakh to Ashar month. ‘Olkachu’ and potato seeds can be planted as companion crops with turmeric.
Turmeric has been cultivated in Hitampur, Melekpuraikati, Tokia, Gopalpur, Mathbati and Gadaipur villages of Gadaipur union and Solua villages of Kapilmuni union of the upazila. To cultivate turmeric, the land has to be cultivated well. Then the soil is leveled with a ladder and the soil on both sides is raised. Turmeric seeds are planted in this elevated soil. Light drainage is formed next to the high ground. When it rains, the water comes out of the drain. Turmeric seeds are not wasted.
Upazila Agriculture Officer Asim Kumar Das said turmeric is a profitable crop. Farmers are benefiting by planting Olkachu and potato seeds as companion crops with turmeric.Turmeric farmers are being given various types of advice from the agriculture office. He hoped that turmeric cultivation will be good as the weather is favorable now.
