Cyclone destroyed hundreds houses

 

In Alfadanga upazila of Faridpur, at least hundred houses of 24 villages of two unions have been destroyed in the cyclone. The storm caused extensive crop damage and downed power lines.

It is known that this cyclone hit Pachuria and Bana Union of Alfadanga Upazila around 1 pm last Wednesday. Numerous trees were broken and uprooted. Hail has caused extensive damage to crops. In many places, trees fell on the roads causing disruption to traffic. During the storm, several villages in the two unions were left in darkness after power lines were cut.

Shamim Fakir, a resident of Kathurakandi village of Pachuria Union, said that this terrible storm hit at least 11 villages including Shirgram, Garania, Pakuria, Tabni, Tonpara, Sealdi Charpara, Joydevpur, Aushir Hat, Kathurakandi, Majpara, Arpara of Pachuria Union. During the storm, a huge tree fell on a semi-ripe house, the only property of Lipi Begum, the widow of that union. At that time, Lipi Begum took shelter in the bathroom to save her life. Numerous trees fell on the road and traffic was stopped. Due to its rupture, the electricity supply was stopped in the village.

AKM Zahidul Hasan Zahid, Alfadanga Upazila Parishad Chairman, said at least hundreds of houses were destroyed and hundreds of trees were uprooted in 24 villages of the two unions. Large areas of crops were destroyed. Many lost their homes and took shelter under the open sky. After reaching the spot, the work of evacuating them to a safe place has started.

Kamrul Ahsan Talukdar, Deputy Commissioner Faridpur, said the local upazila administration and public representatives have been ordered to reach the spot and help the victims. The district administration will provide all kinds of assistance to the victims.
