Over 300 dead trees, small and large, are standing on the Devidwar section of the Cumilla-Sylhet Regional Highway covering a distance of about 10 km area. The dry branches of these trees are broken by rain and strong winds. So pedestrians are injured and vehicles are damaged. Residents are afraid of a major accident the collapse of whole trees.

The highway from Chagura to Bhinglabari in Jafarganj Union of Upazila was seen, and many dead trees are standing up with dry branches, including Shishu, Mehogany, and Raintree on both sides of the highway. Some of them are gnawed, and some have nests of woodpeckers. A few dead trees have leaned on the road. Shopkeepers and residents on the side of the road said that any accident could happen at any time.

Apart from this, as there is no dustbin, the cleaning workers of Devidwar municipality are throwing garbage under these dead trees and setting them on fire. As a result, the roots of several trees were burnt. If there is a little rain or wind, dead trees and branches fall on the road.

Former Chairman of Jafarganj Union Sohrab Hossain said that the dead trees on this road are increasing the fear for the smooth movement of people. If there is a light wind, whole trees and dry branches fall on the road. Many pedestrians and passengers are getting injured. When the wind blows, the dead trees fall on various shops, injuring the traders. Dead trees need to be removed quickly.

Debidwar Upazila Forest Department Officer Abdul Matin said the Cumilla-Sylhet highway will be upgraded to four lanes soon. Because of this, 3,400 dead and alive trees will be cut to widen the area. The forest department is not thinking of removing dead trees separately.
