Farmers busy in jute harvesting

Farmers of Kendua upazila are busy cutting jute and ginning. Due to the timely rains, they are busy with jute cutting and ginning in the canals-bills-Ditch and releasing the fibers. Jute has been cultivated in less than the target area this year.

According to Kendua Upazila Agriculture Office sources, the target for jute cultivation in the upazila this time was 550 hectares. Cultivation has been done in 550 hectares of land. In this, it is 30 hectares less jute cultivation than the target.

Talking to the jute farmers of Chirang Union, it was known that canals and fields have accumulated water due to continuous rain. They are spending a busy time waking the jute after receiving the rain. Everyone is now cutting jute and collecting raw jute in canals and bills for ginning.

Gonda union farmer Sultan Mahmud said, I have grown jute on three bigha land this year. It cost Tk 20 thousand. 12 to 15 maunds of jute will be yielded per bigha. The sale of jute in the market has not started yet. So I don't know exactly how the price will be. If the government had fixed the price, we could have benefited from jute cultivation.

Wisekorun, a farmer from Purboray village, said jute cutting and ginning had started. Jute sales will start in the market within 15-20 days. It is not possible to say how much per maund of jute can be sold. If the price of jute is good in the market, we can see a little profit this year.

Upazila Agriculture Officer Sharmin Sultana said that the yield of jute has been good in the upazila this year. Seeds and fertilizers have been distributed among 50 farmers. Jute was free from disease and insect attack. Farmers will benefit if the market is good. This will increase their interest in jute cultivation in the future.
