Farmers see new hope in mustard cultivation

In Gomstapur of Chapainawabganj, mustard cultivation has become very popular among the farmers. Because both the cultivation time and cost are less in mustard cultivation. In the last few years, the yield of mustard has also increased due to the introduction of new varieties. Due to this, mustard cultivation is increasing day by day in different parts of the upazila. Farmers are seeing a ray of hope in mustard because of the availability of agricultural incentives and good prices in the market. According to the agriculture department, the yield of the developed mustard varieties of Bari and Bina is higher than the conventional indigenous mustard. Because of this, farmers are also interested in it. Many are cultivating mustard seeds after harvesting Aman paddy. After that, Boro can plant again. It is producing crops three times a year on the same land.

Bangladesh Atomic Agriculture Research Institute (BINA) has developed several new varieties over the years. According to the agency, the average yield of Bina mustard per hectare is 1.8 tons. Life span is only 80-85 days. Farmers are benefiting due to increased yield and less time. Apart from this, the farmers are being encouraged to cultivate mustard by the agriculture department. As a result, charming yellow mustard flowers are spreading across the green fields in different parts of the upazila. Rows of boxes are seen in this vast mustard field. Bees help in the pollination of mustard flowers. In addition to honey cultivation, mustard production is also increasing. Both mustard and beekeepers are benefiting. Meanwhile, the mustard field is blooming with flowers. The vast mustard fields of the upazila have become attractive to mustard farmers and people. The farmer said that last year he cultivated mustard on four bigha land. By investing Tk14 thousand, he got 24 maunds of mustard. Profit excluding expenses was about Tk35 thousand. This time they have received seed and fertilizer incentives from the agriculture department for mustard cultivation at the right time. At present, the trees are full of flowers. Mustard yield is good in this region.
