Flash floods disrupt public lives, three died

All the rivers in Jhenaigati, Sreebardi and Nalitabari upazilas bordering Sherpur are flowing above the danger level due to incessant rains and onrush of water from India.

At the same time, more than 100 villages of Sreebardi, including Jhenaigati upazila sadar and Nalitabari municipal areas, have been submerged as at least seven places of the embankments of the Maharshi, Chellakhali and Bhogai rivers breached.

So far, three people have been reported dead in the flash floods. Three others are still missing.

Nalitabari Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Sanwar Hossain said a 65-year-old man named Idris Ali of Khalisakura village drowned in flood waters on Friday afternoon and Ambia Khatun (45) of Baghber village on Friday night.

Besides, Mahua Khatun of Nama Batkuchi village of Nalitabari upazila, two brothers Hatem Ali and Alamgir of Dudunagar village went missing after being swept away by flood waters on Friday night.

It was known that many people of 18 unions of those three upazilas are suffering due to the flash flood. In many places, many houses and trees have been destroyed by the heavy flow of hill waters. Crop fields have been submerged, fish ponds and enclosures have been washed away. Cooking has stopped in many homes. Due to continuous rain for three days, the water level of the local hill rivers has increased. Added to that is the mountain slope coming down from the upstream.

Sherpur Deputy Commissioner Tarafdar Mahmudur Rahman said the water level of the river and flood-hit areas has started receding due to lack of heavy rains. Volunteers from Dhaka and Mymensingh, upazila administration, fire service members and local volunteers are working to rescue the marooned people. All measures have been taken to help the flood victims. Dry food distribution is underway on behalf of the upazila administration.
