A mobile court conducted a drive in the Padma River of Shariatpur late at night to prevent illegal sand extraction. Four people, including a sand cutter dredger machine, were sentenced to prison during the drive.
The drive was conducted in the Padma River adjacent to Baburchar of Kunderchar Union of Jajira Upazila on Monday midnight.
According to district administration sources, unscrupulous sand traders had been illegally extracting sand from the Padma River in an unplanned manner for a long time. Due to this, the locals were afraid of losing their land and the Dam of the Padma River was under threat. In such a situation, after the local community became vocal, the district administration started conducting regular drives in the Padma River.
In continuation of this, Assistant Commissioner of the District Administration Sohel Rana and Assistant Commissioner (Land) of Jajira Upazila Sadia Binte Solaiman jointly conducted a drive in the Padma River on Monday midnight.
During this, a mobile court sentenced 4 people to one month in prison each for illegally extracting sand, including disabling a sand dredger machine, according to the Sand and Soil Management Act 2010.
Those sentenced to one month in prison by the mobile court are Moktar Hossain (29), son of Mizan Khan of Madhyachali area of Chandpur district, Zahir Bepari (24), son of Abu Taher Bepari of Charaldi village of Kabirhat area of Noakhali district, Al-Amin Hossain (24), son of Alauddin, and Russell (20), son of Abdul Khalek of Charfalkon Enakar of Lakshmipur district.
Mobile court judge and Assistant Commissioner (Land) of Jajira Upazila Sadia Binte Solaiman said, regular drives are being conducted on the orders of the Deputy Commissioner against unscrupulous sand traders for illegally extracting sand from the Padma River. In continuation of this, four people were sentenced to one month in prison after a drive was conducted on Monday midnight. The drive will continue to prevent illegal sand extraction.
