The journal approved four more Bangladeshi products as Geographical Indication (GI) products. Among those four products, Rangpur's Haribhanga mango has been placed. The Ministry of Industry confirmed this on Monday.

In addition to Haribhanga mango, Moulvibazar's Agar, Moulvibazar's Agar Attar and Muktagachha's Monda have been recognized as GI products in the country. With this, the number of approved GI products in Bangladesh stood at 28.

Rezaul Islam Milon, president of Rangpur Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce and Industries, said, "We are very happy that our Rangpur product Haribhanga mango has been recognized as a GI product this time. This will further mobilize the wheel of our economy. Earlier our ‘Shatranchi’ was recognized as GI product. We are really happy that two products of Rangpur have got GI recognition in the country. I am also proud as a Rangpur resident.

It was known that Haribhanga mango is a famous and delicious mango in Bangladesh. The world-famous Haribhanga mango originates from Khoragach union of Mithapukur upazila of Rangpur district. The 'history' of mango was started by a tree lover named Nafal Uddin Paikar.

Initially, it was called Maldia. Under the mango tree, he used to make filters with earthen pots and give water. One night someone broke the earthen pot. There is a huge amount of mangoes on that tree which was very tasty. When they are taken to the market for sale, people want to know about those mangoes. Then the farmer Nafal Uddin told the people, these are the mangoes of the tree under which the people were breaking. Since then, the mango of that tree has become known as the Haribhanga mango. At present, the mother tree of Rangpur's Haribhanga mango tree is 63 years old.
