Illegal structures evicted Cox‍‍`s Mayor

A part of the district government public library has been built on the canal. Not only this, many public and private institutions in Cox's Bazar have built illegal structures on the drains. Because of which, when it rains, the water drainage is disrupted. As a result, severe flooding occurred throughout the city. The people of the city suffered greatly.

Therefore, Cox's Bazar Municipality has taken a hard line to resolve the waterlogging. As part of which, the authority has started the evacuation operation. An ultimatum was given to remove within three days.

Under the leadership of Municipal Mayor Mahabubur Rahman Chowdhury, 10 structures built on the canal were demolished yesterday. Many encroachers were given time to remove the illegal structures from above the canal. On the first day, evacuation operations were carried out in the District Public Library,  Kaniyar Bazaar and Light House areas. Mayor Mahabubur Rahman Chowdhury told journalists after the evacuation operation that Cox's Bazar municipality has numerous small drains for water drainage. The water of these drains falls into Bankkhali river through 8-10 large drains. But over the years, occupying the canal, the encroaching gang has built various structures including walls.

Municipal cleaners cannot clean the drains. As a result, when it rains, flooding occurs in the city. So this campaign has been started to free the city dwellers from the curse of waterlogging. Which will run every day. No matter how powerful the nala occupiers are, no one will be spared. Nazrul Islam, Coordinator of Cox's Bazar Citizen Movement, said that due to encroachment of drains and unplanned development, the city dwellers have to face unlimited hardships when it rains. So this campaign is very important. Current and future generations will benefit if the city's drains are free of encroachment. Besides, the tourist city will be free from flooding.
