Farmers of Aricha Kashadaha Irrigation Project suffering from irrigation shortage because of char fallen in Jamuna river in Manikganj's Shibaloy. If the irrigation problem not solved before the beginning of the full season of Iri-boro, the boro plantation will be severely disrupted.
Farmers of the region said that there is a possibility of food shortage. On behalf of the irrigation project, an application has been made to Manikganj Deputy Commissioner, Upazila Nirbahi Officer, and Agriculture Department to supply water to the irrigation project by cutting the char as soon as possible.
Going to spot,it was seen that, in front of the water house of the Kashadaha irrigation project on the banks of the Jamuna river in the Aricha Khalpar area of Shibaloy, a huge char has risen in the river. The river has moved away. There is no water anywhere around it. In such a situation, the local farmers said that it is not possible to plant boro this year with river water through this irrigation project if the canal is not cut. Maksud Ali, a farmer of Bara Anulia village, said, "We have been cultivating iri-boro by installing pumps on the banks of the Jamuna river for 40 years directly using river water. In this, the fertility of the land is fixed and the cost of irrigation is also reduced. This year, irrigation will not be possible if the canal is not cut in front of the water house. The Boro plant will be closed. As a result, there may be food shortages in the area.
Moshiur Rahman Awal, President of Kashadaha Irrigation Project, said that, for a long time, we have been cultivating Boro paddy by taking water directly from the Jamuna River with the help of pumps through this irrigation project. This year BIWTA has dug up the river and dumped the dredged soil, resulting in massive char in the Jamuna River. In addition to the food shortage in the area, there will also be an extreme shortage of cow food. In this regard, an application has been made to the concerned people including the Deputy Commissioner.
Shibaloy Upazila Agriculture Officer Razia Tarafdar said that discussions are being held with the Upazila administration and parishads to solve the irrigation problem. This problem will be solved soon.
