Journo shot in Narsingdi

A local journalist named Moniruzzaman Monir (40) was shot and beaten with a hammer in Raipura of Narsingdi. The incident took place at Sreerampur Bazar in Raipura yesterday afternoon.

The injured was identified as Moniruzzaman Monir, president of Raipura Upazila Reporters Club and Raipura correspondent of Desh Rupantar. He is the son of Nur Mohammad of Methikanda village of the upazila.

Witnesses said a group of 10 people, including Abid Hasan Rubel and his younger brother Tutul, the main accused in the murder case of vice-chairman candidate Sumon Mia, attacked journalist Monir yesterday. When journalist Monir entered a shop in self-defense, he was brought out of there and beaten with a hammer. They then fired several rounds at him and fled. Locals rescued him and took him to Raipura Upazila Health Complex from where doctors sent him to Dhaka for better treatment.

As there was no activity of Raipura Police Station during the incident, members of Bangladesh Army cooperated. The army team went to the hospital and inquired about the injured journalist Moniruzzaman and strengthened security in Raipura town.  Local journalists alleged that the incident was carried out with the intention of murder.

President of Narsingdi District Reporters Club Shafiqul Islam Ripon, Raipura Upazila Reporters Club, Raipura Journalist Forum, Raipura Press Club and leaders of Narsingdi district and upazila journalist organizations strongly condemned the incident and demanded exemplary trial of the terrorists under the law immediately.

Ranjan Kumar Barman, resident medical officer (RMO) of Raipura Upazila Health Complex, said the bullets hit the hands and legs. There is also a serious head injury. As the situation was not in our favor, we sent him to Dhaka for better treatment.
