- River pollution is increasing along with environmental damage
- The two banks of the river are being filled with garbage
Dead Khoai River near DCP High School and Muktijoddha Bhavan of Ward No. 5 in Chunarughat Municipality of Habiganj. Both sides of the bridge built over the river have now turned into a garbage dump. Garbage from different areas of the city is being dropped to the river bank.
Due to the garbage dumped on the banks of the river, along with the destruction of the environment, the pollution of the river is gradually increasing. The two banks of the river are being filled with garbage. The authorities have not taken any measures to solve the problem even though the locals have complained about this several times. On the other hand, the Chunarughat Municipal Authority has been in the face of controversy as it has not been possible to develop a modern management of garbage for a long time.
The victims complained that all the garbage and waste from the bridge area near the DCP School was going into the river. Bhagad has been built on the bank of the bridge. All garbage in the market is dumped on the banks of rivers. Even garbage from different areas of the municipality is being dumped on the banks of the river.
Local people said that when you come to the market, you have to come with a handkerchief on your nose. Diseases and germs are spreading in this garbage. Moreover, due to the strong stench, the area cannot be visited.
Assistant Professor Mazharul Islam, convenor of Chunarughat dead Khoai River Protection Committee, said that once upon a time, boats used to sail in the Khoai River and fishermen used to catch fish. It has become a dead river over time. There are no fish in the river, also the water is poisoned by garbage. Even houses and shops have been built on both sides of the river. On the one hand, illegal encroachment is taking place, on the other hand, this river has become a dump of municipal waste.
Municipal Mayor Saiful Alam Rubel said that the municipality does not throw garbage at present in the river. Signboards have also been provided on both sides of the bridge as an initiative of the municipality to prevent littering in the river. Care has also been taken to ensure that no one sets fire to the garbage heap. Still, the municipal authorities do not know who is throwing garbage.
UNO Neelima Raihana said that throwing garbage in areas where people gather is not environmentally friendly. Actions will be taken to remove garbage immediately after the national elections.
