Madhumati devours roads, homesteads

Erosion has occurred in the Madhumati river in Kamarkhali union of Madhukhali upazila of Faridpur due to continuous rains and the river water has started to decrease.

In the last four-five months, the homesteads and roads of seven families of Paschim Salamatpur village of the upazila have been destroyed. Many families are at risk of breaking up. At least 10 acres of cropland has gone into the river due to erosion.

The agricultural land of Salamatpur and Dayarampur villages is collapsing in the blink of an eye. Many people on the west-north bank of the river in Salamatpur village are spending sleepless nights due to the fear of erosion. However, the Water Development Board (BWDB) has said to take quick action in the affected areas to prevent erosion.

Looking around the damaged area, the people of Goeshpur, Baksipur, Jarjarnagar, Bijay Nagar, Charaksundi of Kamarkhali Union of the upazila are desperate to save themselves from the destruction of Madhumati river.

Rakib Hossain Chowdhury, Chairman of Kamarkhali Union, said that we have already contacted the officials of the Water Development Board to protect the agricultural land, mosques, madrasas and educational institutions of the villages.

When asked about the prevention of river erosion, Water Development Board Faridpur District Sub-Divisional Engineer Santosh Karmakar said that we have spoken to the higher officials. Work has started in some areas. The dam work will start soon.
