In Maheshkhali of Cox's Bazar district, electricity theft has been happening for a long time by stealing electricity from the main transmission line and using secret connections in a risky manner. As no one took the risk of carrying out raids in the middle of the night, the members of this criminal group continue theft day by day. In Maheshkhali upazila, the concerned authorities are aware of this matter, but for some mysterious reasons, they did not go to the raids in some places. Despite going on raids in many places, there is no mention of any action being taken against them. Due to which this thief syndicate was recklessly using illegal electricity.
Yesterday, Maheshkhali Upazila Assistant Commissioner Land Office and Palli Bidyut Zonal Office in a briefing said, Maheshkhali Upazila Chhota Maheshkhali Union under the jurisdiction of Lombaghona Bazar area in a spot electricity was being used illegally by hooking from the transmission line of Maheshkhali Palli Bidyut Samiti. Maheshkhali Palli Bidyut Office informed about the matter to Maheshkhali Assistant Commissioner (Land) and Executive Magistrate Deepak Tripura. Later on October 29 (Tuesday) around 8 pm, a team led by Magistrate Deepak Tripura, officials of the Electricity Office, police and Ansar members raided the area of Chhota Maheshkhali and the truth of the incident was proved.
At that time, the electricity connection was disconnected and a person was fined Tk fifty thousand for the crime of illegal using electricity, damaging electrical goods and obstructing the electricity supply line. The fined person is Arifur Islam, son of Shamshul Islam, a native of Chhota Maheshkhali Union. It is said that Arifur Islam is a family member of the current chairman of that Union Parishad, Rian Sikder.
