People enjoy fishing festival at Burir Dam

Shuk river is located between the two unions of Akcha and Chilarang of Thakurgaon Sadar Upazila. And the people of Thakurgaon are enjoying the fishing festival at Burir dam of Suk river. At the beginning of winter, Burir dam fishing is open to all. This is how the fishing meeting in Burir dam area has been going on for years at this time of the beginning of winter. Last Monday the Burir Dam gate was opened. Later, when the water receded, thousands of people from different parts of the district, including fishermen from a few nearby villages, went fishing from early morning yesterday.

It can be seen on the ground that thousands of people from villages and towns have taken up their positions at this old dam in Akcha and Chilarong areas for fishing. Men, women and children are also included in this group. Everyone has come down with jal, polo, khocha and lafizal. Besides, those who don't have fishing equipment also went down to catch fish with their bare hands in the wet water. Also, fish hunters come to Burir Dam with different fishing equipment including Fika net, Lafi net, Current net, Ring net, Chatka net to catch fish.

According to the information of Water Development Board Thakurgaon, under the Bangladesh Water Development Board in 1951-52 during the dry season, a water tank was constructed in the Suk River flowing between Achka and Chilarong Union of Thakurgaon Sadar Upazila for the irrigation of agricultural land in the region. Later it was named Burir Dam. Every year during the monsoon season, water is retained here to cultivate the high land of the area. Every year, different types of fish fry are released in the water trapped reservoir by the initiative of the Department of Fisheries. Akcha and Chilarang Union Parishad (UP) take care of these. And after releasing the water of the dam at the beginning of winter, it is opened for fishing. This is how Burir dam fishing festival is held every year.

Parvez Hasan of the district town said, "Every time I come here to fish." Many people come here from different places to catch fish. Everyone likes to fish together. It turns into a fair today. Fish is not available since last two years. Even though many fishes were being found, the native fishes are declined. But this time, even if local fish are seen, we common people who are coming to catch fish are getting very less fish because of the leaf ring nets of the traders. The fishermen who came to fish said that the water trap will be open for the next few days. Fishing will continue these days. But on the first day, the crowd of people for fishing is the highest. And from the last 2/3 years fish is very less available. Due to ring nets, current nets, there are no native fishes.

Abdur Rashid, a local school teacher who came to fish, said, I came to fish early in the morning. Basically, I come here to fish every time for fun. I fished from dawn till nine in the morning and got two kg of fish including Puti, Tengra. I will happily eat this at home. Golam Zakaria, executive engineer of Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) Thakurgaon, said that the Burir dam irrigation project was constructed around 1951-52. There is a fish sanctuary in front of the dam. Every year, the district fisheries department releases various fish fry in the impounded water during the monsoon season. And after releasing the water of the dam at the beginning of winter, it is opened for fishing.
