Ppl suffer for battered roads

A regional road in the district has become impassable due to lack of renovation. The Rajnagar-Kheaghatbazar link road sinks during heavy rains as it has been further damaged by the recent floods. Although the period of capacity and movement has expired long ago, the concerned authorities have not taken any initiative to reform the situation. It is reported that the road, which is only 17 km long from Rajnagar Sadar, was handed over to the Road Department from the Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) in 2019, but has not seen the face of renovation yet. A source of the concerned office said that the renovation work of the road may not be done due to the budget constraint in the country along with the change in the political context.

Cracks have appeared on almost 90% of the roads. Incessant rains cause waterlogging in many places including Rajnagar Sadar, Mokambazar, Azader Bazar. Besides, it is getting smaller day by day due to encroachment on various market parts of the road. It has constant traffic jams. Cars cannot move on the road normally. Because of this, about 3 lakh people of Rajnagar and Balaganj upazilas of Sylhet have fallen behind in the development of communication systems and trade.

When some places of the Kushiara river located on the edge of the road were tested for the construction of the bridge, it was finally concluded that the bridge will be built over Hamidpur in the Rajnagar part and Radhakona village in the Balaganj part across the river. Engineers of the road department prepared the design of the bridge with inquiries from the government authorities. At present, the design work of the bridge is ongoing. Apart from this, consultants have been appointed for the renovation of the bridge link road in the Rajnagar section. Although the project is supposed to be finalized at the highest level of the government, the road is not seeing the light of day due to changes in the political context. Moulvibazar Roads and Public Roads Department Executive Engineer Kaiser Hamid said that tenders have been called for the repair of the road. The tender is invited from Additional Sylhet Zone. Reforms are more likely if the budget is not tight.
