Half of the iron bridge over the Baraharpara Canal (Sadhur Bridge) between Mombipara and Paurgoja villages in Latachapali Union of Kalapara Upazila of Patuakhali has been broken. The local people are moving by building wooden planks. The broken part of the bridge is lying in the water. At present people of five villages are moving through culverts with extreme risk. But now no heavy vehicles can move. People have to suffer.
It is known that LGED constructed the iron bridge in 2005 on the Barahar Canal flowing between Mombipara and Paurgoja villages. The iron angles under the bridge corroded within a few years due to the tidal flow of salty water in the Baraharpara Canal. The 250 feet long iron bridge has not undergone any kind of renovation in 18 years. As a result, it fell into disrepair.
According to locals, the southern side of the bridge collapsed during the crossing of a tomtom loaded with manure on the night of August 11 last year. The bridge was initially repaired with wooden planks for later movement. It has been eight long months in this state. Despite that, motorcycles, autovans, and easy bikes are crossing at extreme risk. A major accident can occur at any time when wooden planks break. People from 5 villages including Mombipara, Baraharpara, Nahunpara, Gangamati, and Paurgoja travel through this destroyed bridge.
