Amir Hossain of Charfashan upazila got success by cultivating 'Black Baby' variety of watermelon for the first time.
In the current season, he has sold watermelons worth Tk 110,000. He still has watermelons worth Tk 20 to 30 thousand in his farm. He spent about Tk 50 thousand to grow these watermelons. This watermelon can be cultivated two to three times at any time of the year except winter.
Farmer Amir Hossain sowed watermelon seeds of 'Black Baby' variety for the first time in his 24 Shatak land, with the funding of Palli-Karma Sahih Foundation (PKSF) and with the support of Family Development Agency (FDA), he got a good yield of watermelon after two months.
Farmer Amir Hossain sells baby watermelon at Tk 80-90 per kg. One watermelon weighs 2 to 5 kg. Also, these baby watermelons are available in the fruit shops of Shashibhushan and Sadar Road areas of Charfashion Sadar Upazila.
Watermelon farmer Amir Hossain said that earlier he used to grow vegetables. His interest increased when he saw the foreign variety 'Black Baby' watermelons being sold at high prices in the market. He has benefited from cultivating this watermelon for the first time with the help of the non-governmental organization Family Development Agency (FDA).
Amir Hossain said that black baby watermelon cultivation will increase three times next year, seeing his success, many people around the house have expressed their interest in baby watermelon cultivation.
Agriculture Officer of Charfashan Sadar Upazila, agriculturist Roknuzzaman visited watermelon farmer Amir Hossain's baby watermelon field and said that along with Charfashan Upazila Agriculture Extension Directorate, private organization Family Development Agency (FDA) is working on field level in agricultural extension. This watermelon is sweeter and tastier than normal watermelon. Family Development Agency (FDA) is working for the economic development of farmers by cultivating this high value crop in full cooperation. We hope that this watermelon will gain popularity very quickly in Charfashion upazila.
