In Rangpur Medical College (RMC) Hospital, the number of patients suffering from various diseases including cold diarrhoea, pneumonia, asthma, breathing difficulties has increased three times than normal. In such a situation, three children die every day due to cold-related diseases in this medical center, according to the doctors in charge of the hospital.
After visiting, it was seen that all the wards of RMC Hospital, including medicine and children's wards, are full of patients. However, the number of admissions in children's wards is increasing every day and the number of children is suffering from diarrhea is high. 22 children died in this hospital in the last 11 days. At least 12 elderly patients died during the same period. However, there is no separate information on deaths due to cold-related diseases in the register of children's department. Even the doctors in charge of the children's department expressed their limitation to give information about this.
As against 80 beds in two children's, wards number 9 and 10 on the third floor of the hospital, 350 children were admitted till yesterday noon. Child patients piled are seen up next to each bed, in this cold. Many children are being given treatment on hospital's floors and balconies due to a shortage of beds. Most of the children admitted in the two wards are suffering from cold-related diseases including fever, diarrhoea, pneumonia and respiratory problems. 22 children died in two wards in the last seven days. As a result, the average number of child deaths is three per day.
Dr. Mustafa Zaman, assistant professor of the hospital's children's department, said the number of children suffering from cold-related diseases has increased. At present, children are more affected by diarrhea, pneumonia and various cold-related diseases.
Hospital director Dr. Yunus Ali said that the intensity of winter has increased in Rangpur region. The number of patients admitted to the hospital due to cold-related diseases is also increasing comparatively. Children and elderly people are more among them. As there are more patients than beds in the pediatric wards, most of the patients are being treated as outpatients and sent home. Only those, whose condition is serious, are being admitted. He said that many of them are recovering.
