120 metric tons of onions arrived from Myanmar through Teknaf land port in Cox's Bazar. These onions arrived in the country from Akyab port in Myanmar On Tuesday morning. Traders are hoping that the imported onions will bring some relief to the volatile state of the onion market in the domestic market.

General Manager of Teknaf Land Port Authority United Land Port Limited Mo Jasim Uddin Chowdhury said that the import and export of this land port with Myanmar was closed for 42 days. Last Tuesday morning, 120 metric tons of onions and 80 metric tons of dried betel nuts arrived at Teknaf land port through M/s Farooq Traders. Arrangements are being made to supply these onions to different parts of the country after releasing them from the trawler.

Omar Farooq, owner of the importing company MS Farooq Traders, said that there are 600 metric tons of onions still in Myanmar. If the situation in that country is not normal, the import of goods may be hampered altogether.

After checking the local market in Teknaf, it was found that last Tuesday, desi onion was selling at 130 to 140 taka per kg and Indian onion was selling at 180 taka per kg. But Myanmar onion is also valued like Indian onion in the local market. Consumers expect Myanmar onions to be available in the retail market for under Tk 150.

Incidentally, the Arakan Army (AA), a pro-independence armed group, is fighting with the country's security forces in Myanmar's Rakhine state. Because of this, goods from the Rakhine district town of Maungdoo and Akyab port to Teknaf land port were stopped. After 42 long days, import of goods from Myanmar resumed at Teknaf land port.
