Potato import has started through Benapole port. The first shipment of 74 metric tons of potatoes was unloaded from the port yesterday.
On Thursday night, 74 metric tons of potatoes in 1,480 sacks in three trucks entered Benapole port from India. Integrated Food and Beverage Ltd Bangladesh is the importer of the potato and exporter is Pepsico India Holdings, India. Due to the government holiday, it was not possible to unload the potato shipment from the bond on Friday. However, the potato shipment is being released from the port yesterday.
It was known that after the decision of the Ministry of Commerce, the government allowed 12 importers to import about 50,000 tonnes of potatoes from India against 77 applications.
Benapole Land Port Acting Director Rezaul Karim said 74 metric tonnes of potatoes entered the port from India through Benapole port on Thursday night. Potato shipments are kept at the transshipment yard of the port number 31.
Rabindra Kumar Singh, deputy commissioner of the Customs House, said the duty is being levied at USD 180 per metric ton of potatoes. As a result, the duty of potato per metric ton is Tk 6689.50. Accordingly, the duty of potato is Tk 6.70 per kg. The cost of importing potatoes per kg, including potato purchase, LC cost and duty, is around Tk 29. As a result, it is possible to supply the market at Tk 30 to 32.
