Bangladesh received $221.59 million in the second month (August) of the current financial year.

Dhaka district received the highest amount of $107 million while Lalmonirhat received the lowest amount of $1.5 million, according to the Bangladesh Bank statistics of district-based remittance.

This figure is obtained from Bangladesh Bank's latest district-wise expatriate income data. It has been seen that among the eight divisions of the country, the flow of expatriate income is the highest in the districts of Chittagong and Dhaka divisions. And it is the least in Rangpur division. In the last month, i.e. August, expatriate Bangladeshis sent a total of $221 million to the country.

This month, the expatriate income in Dhaka Division is $107 million, Chattagram $60.77 million, Sylhet $20.8 million, Khulna $10.49 million, Rajshahi $8.74 million, Mymensingh $4.84 million, Barishal $5.8 million and Rangpur division received the lowest remittance of only $3.86 million.

According to Central Bank data, expatriates remitted $221.59 million in remittances to the country through banking channels in August, which was the highest compared to August in the previous five fiscal years. Expatriates sent less income through banking channels in July as part of a movement to topple the government that morphed from a quota movement to an anti-discrimination student movement.

However, the interim government took over after Sheikh Hasina resigned and fled the country after intense agitation by the students. Due to which expatriates also sent money more enthusiastically through banking channels. As a result, the amount of expatriate income has increased in August of the current financial year 2024-25. During this time, expatriates sent $221 crore 58 lakh 80 thousand to the country.

Top five districts in expatriate income: According to the data of Bangladesh Bank, Dhaka district has the highest expatriate income in the country. Then there are the locations of Chittagong, Sylhet, Comilla and Noakhali districts respectively. In the last month of August, expatriate income of $71 crore 33 million has arrived in Dhaka district. Chittagong district, which is in the second position, received $187.8 million of expatriate income. This time, Comilla district has left behind the districts of Noakhali and Sylhet. Apart from this $2 crore 55 million in Barisal, 2 crore 1 million dollars in Jashore and $1 crore 86 million in Bogra.

Districts with low income: Lalmonirhat, Rangamati, Joypurhat, Panchagarh and Khagrachari are the most backward districts in receiving expatriate income in August of the current financial year 2024-25. Lalmonirhat has the lowest expatriate income, only $1.5 million.

Dhaka district alone receives more expatriate income, but the flow of expatriate income to other districts of Dhaka division is comparatively less. On the other hand, most of the districts of Chittagong Division receive significant amount of expatriate income. However, three hill districts and Cox's Bazar are exceptions in this case.

Eight districts of Rangpur division are the most backward in expatriate income. In the month of July-August, these eight districts collectively received three million 86 million dollars of expatriate income. After Rangpur, Mymensingh's expatriate income is $48.4 million.
