An outbreak of rotavirus occurred in Cumilla's Brahmanpara before winter has fully set in. Children more affected by it. As a result, diarrheal diseases are increasing in children. Affected by this virus, patients and their relatives are flocking to different hospitals including Upazila Health Complex. Doctors said, outbreak of this virus occurs every year in the winter due to the lack of official vaccination and children are easily affected for this. However, the concerned doctors request to avoid open and stale food to prevent rotavirus infection. According to Upazila Health Complex source, 79 patients infected with rota virus have been admitted to Upazila Health Complex with diarrhea-related illness in last 12 days. Besides, more than a hundred patients have received treatment from the emergency department and outpatient department of the health complex.
From November 25 to December 4, there 79 patients infected with rotavirus were admitted to the upazila health complex with diarrhea related illness. Most of these patients are children. Apart from this, more than hundred patients have received treatment from the outpatient department and emergency department of the health complex. Apart from Upazila Health Complex, other private hospitals and clinics of Upazila are thronged daily by patients and their relatives. However, the concerned doctors said that the patients are recovering within two to three days. Doctors said that main medicine for diarrhea is saline. If the patient spews a lot, it is necessary to get treatment in the hospital. Otherwise, doctors advise to take treatment at home.
Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer Dr Abu Hasnat Md Mohiuddin Mubin said, this virus enters the body through food. Its prevalence is seen in winter. There is a lot of reluctance to use water during winter. This increases the risk of contracting the virus. He also said that saline is the mainstay of treatment for patients infected with rotavirus. However, to protect against rota virus in winters, open food and stale food should be avoided. Wash your hands thoroughly with soapy water before eating. Infected patients can be treated at home if they do not have excessive vomiting. If the patient vomits more, he should be admitted to the hospital and get treatment.
