- Broken bamboo poles, waterlogging, polluted water, unsanitary environment and public suffering are daily companions of residents.
Even after 22 years of incorporation from Barisal Municipality to City Corporation, 147 families of West Kaunia Lakutia Canal Bank of Ward No. 1 of the City Corporation are still deprived of civic facilities. Broken bamboo poles, waterlogging, polluted water, unsanitary environment and public suffering are the daily companions of the residents here. One after another the people's representative came, but more than 600 people of 147 families of Lakutia canal did not get the minimum civic facilities. The victims said that due to staying in the Barisal City Corporation area, they pay taxes regularly but do not get any benefits. On the surface, the West Kaunia Lakutia canal in Ward No. 1 of the city shows that the only means of movement for these 147 families is a broken bamboo stilt. It can be seen by crossing the gate.
A narrow street for 147 families on the banks of the canal surrounds the walled industrial city of BISIC. Women are cooking by sitting on the side of the road. Talking to them, it is known that even though they have been living there for more than 20 years, they are not getting any civil facilities.
Nargis Akhter said that more than 600 people travel through these broken bamboo poles. The mayor-commissioners give empty words of hope, but no one fixes the way for us to move. So many came and went. But no one fixed this bamboo plate. Moreover, there is no system of education and health services here. Sometimes one or two NGOs provide health care and education for children. Which is insufficient compared to the requirement. Sathi, a class VI student, said that there are hundreds of girls here, but there is no support for their health. Sometimes one or two NGOs come and give health protection items. Besides, education of children is provided here through an NGO.
Rahima Sultana Kajal, Executive Director of Avas, a private development organization, said that the City Corporation should stand by the side of this community. But they don't help much. We help children and women through various projects from time to time. For these backward communities, various development organizations including the city corporation should stand by.
In this regard, Chief Executive Officer of Barisal City Corporation Md Rezaul Bari said, as far as we have found out, they have not yet come under the tax of City Corporation. If they come under tax, they will be given all kinds of civic privileges.
Pradeep Das, development worker of the Private development organization Avas, said that Avas is working on the sanitization system. Not only that, I have given the benefits of toilets and education for their children on behalf of Avas. They should talk to the city corporation officials about their issues. We want them to have all the benefits of the city. We are concerned about the sufferings of the residents of Khakutia Canal, the residents of the city hope that the problem will be resolved soon.
