Farmers are benefiting from brinjal cultivation in Mirsarai of Chittagong. They are increasing the scope of farming day by day. The brinjal produced here is being taken to different cities of the country including Dhaka and Chittagong to meet the demand of the area. Many people cultivate brinjal in the winter season even if they cultivate other vegetables in the year. Many have changed their fortunes by cultivating high-yielding 'Tal Begun' with modern methods.
According to upazila agriculture office sources, eggplant has been planted in 120 hectares of land in the upazila. Out of this, 35 hectares of land has been planted with 'Tal Begun'. More eggplants have been planted in Zorarganj, Durgapur, Mirsrai Sadar and Khaiachhra Unions of the upazila. The eggplant produced here is being sold in the market for the past one month. Farmers are happy with good prices so far.
Shah Emran Salim, a farmer of East Khaiachara area, said, I have cultivated palm eggplant on 50th century land. It has cost Tk44 thousand. I have sold Tk32 thousand so far. We are selling brinjal wholesale at Tk 45-47 per kg. I can sell for about 2 more months. If the price is like this, it will be possible to sell brinjal worth about Tk 2 to 2.5 lakh.
Jane Alam, a wholesaler, said that now a lot of brinjal is cultivated in Mirsrai. Eggplant here is also better in terms of quality. That is why there is a huge demand in Dhaka and Chittagong cities. We tell the price of eggplant to the farmer on the phone the day before we come to buy it. The next day it is weighed and marketed well and sent to different places.
Upazila Agriculture Officer Pratap Chandra Roy said, as palm eggplant is profitable, cultivation is increasing day by day in Mirsrai. Each eggplant weighs between 400 and 800 grams. Due to the huge demand of this brinjal in the local and foreign markets, the farmers get good prices throughout the year. Agriculture Department is always with the farmers.
