Dengue outbreak increasing in Sylhet

-No necessary medicine to kill mosquitoes

Sylhet is much safer than other districts of the country in terms of dengue. But the fear of dengue is suddenly increasing in safe Sylhet.

This fear has been created among the residents of Sylhet due to the increase of dengue outbreak in the whole country. Almost every day someone is getting infected and admitted to the hospital. Health experts say dengue outbreaks usually occur from July to October. Because Aedes mosquito spreads during this period. Prevention is the only way to stop the spread of dengue. Where water accumulates, it becomes a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Arrangements should be made to prevent the spread of mosquitoes. Mosquitoes must be drawn before sleeping.

According to Sylhet Divisional Health Directorate, dengue patients are being detected almost every day. The number of dengue patients in the hospital is increasing. 60 dengue patients have been detected in the entire department in the last 14 days (November 1 - November 14). 14 of them are under treatment in hospital. And in the last 24 hours, 4 people have been identified in the department. However, no one has died of dengue since the beginning of the year. At present, 6 dengue patients are admitted in the hospital. Among them 4 people in Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital, 1 person in Sylhet Women's Medical College Hospital, 1 person in Sylhet Mount Edora Hospital. Besides, from the beginning of the year (January 1 - November 14), a total of 229 people were infected with dengue in Sylhet division. Among them, 56 people have been infected in Sylhet district.

Meanwhile, the mosquito infestation has increased in Sylhet metropolis. Even during the day, mosquito nets, burning coils or aerosol spraying are not getting rid of mosquitoes.

Some residents of Tilagarh, Shibganj, Amberkhana, Subidbazar and Lamabazar areas of the metropolis said that the mosquito infestation has increased drastically since last 15-20 days. They are terrified by the dengue epidemic and death toll in the capital this year.

Syed Saiful Islam, a resident of Shibganj area, said, 'Mosquitoes are biting equally day and night. Burning coils or spraying aerosols can't help. Now I am forced to pull mosquito nets even during the day.

Badsha Gazi, a resident of Jalalabad area, said that garbage has been left at the intersections of different areas of the city, including our area. Mosquitoes are born from these places with little rain. The city corporation should clean the garbage regularly. So that water does not accumulate anywhere. But I notice their extreme negligence. However, Sylhet City Corporation is not paying attention to mosquito control. The authorities said that they do not have the necessary medicine to kill mosquitoes. Sylhet City Corporation (SCC) Chief Health Officer Zahidul Islam said that due to various crises, mosquito control activities have been closed for almost a year. We have already discussed the matter in the council. SCC will start operations from 15th of this month.
