Journalists of Dhamrai, Savar and Ashulia formed a human chain and staged demonstrations protesting the filing of a case against two journalists of Dhamrai upazila over false allegations of firing during the anti-discrimination student movement.
The journalists formed a human chain in front of Thana Road Press Club on Dhaka-Aricha highway in Dhamrai around 11:00 am yesterday.
On the other hand, hundreds of men and women of all classes and professions, including journalists, organized a human chain and demonstration program in front of Bathuli Scale on the Dhaka-Aricha highway around 12 noon.
Speakers said that journalist Monowar Hossain Rubel and journalist Rajan Ahmed have been performing their professional duties with reputation for a long time. Such a case against them will call into question the spirit of independent journalism. They urged the authorities concerned to take immediate steps to withdraw the names of the two journalists from the case. Otherwise, more stringent programs will be taken, said journalist leaders.
Dhamrai Press Club President Abdur Rashid Tushar, General Secretary Abdul Kader, Dhamrai Reporters Club President Adnan Hossain, Prothom Alo Senior Assistant Editor Mahmud Iqbal, RTV Staff Reporter Ziaur Rahman and others spoke on the occasion.
On October 22, a case was filed with the Dhaka Judicial Court against 90 people, including Dhaka District Awami League President Benazir Ahmed. Journalist Monowar Hossain Rubel and Rajan Ahmed have been made accused number 37 and 84 in the case. As soon as the information of the case came to light, local journalists expressed anger and protest.
