Moniruzzaman Monir, president of Raipura Reporters Club and upazila correspondent of the daily Desh Rupantor, was attacked and shot at in Narsingdi's Raipura. Narsingdi Union of Journalists organized the human chain in front of Narsingdi Press Club at 11:30 am yesterday.
Journalists from all walks of life working in the district and upazila were present in the human chain and condemned the barbaric attack. Narsingdi Union of Journalists President Shahadat Hossain Raju presided over the meeting.
Narsingdi Press Club Office Secretary Tofail Ahmed Swapan, Senior Member Haladhar Das, Joynal Abedin, Md. Faruk Mia, Manzil-e-Millat, Narsingdi Press Club member and Daily Desh Rupantor Sumon Barman, Bangla TV District Correspondent Sharif Iqbal Russell, Narsingdi District Reporters Unity President Shafiqul Islam Moti spoke at the human chain.
Speakers at the human chain said journalists are the mirror of society. They exposed all injustice and corruption before the people through their pen. In recent times, Raipura has become a sanctuary for terrorists. Leaders of different political parties in Raipur have been attacking, occupying and torturing the common people. The terrorists became angry with him for holding a pen against the identified terrorists of Monir area. They tried to kill him by shooting in public and beating him with a hammer. He is now fighting for his life in the bed of Dhaka Medical College Hospital. We demand immediate arrest and punishment of those involved in the incident.
The speakers also said that from now on, no attack on journalists will be tolerated. Besides, if those involved in the terrorist attack on Monir are not brought under the law immediately, the journalist community of the district along with the civil society will build a movement.
