Millions People suffer from potholes on road

The historic Grand Trunk Road of Sonargaon in Narayanganj turns into a dilapidated state when water accumulates on the road when it rains continuously.

From Mograpara intersection to Baidyerbazar Ghat, the bitumen of the road is about two kilometers and numerous small and large potholes have been created. Small and big accidents often occur in it. Pedestrians and passengers and drivers of various vehicles have to suffer a lot to travel through the road.

Local residents said that the Roads and Highways Department renovated the road last year after the road was in a bad condition for about four years. This reform did not last long. As soon as it rains, the bitumen and mud on the road rises up and creates small and big holes. In this year too, RHD repaired the road several times. But in many places the bitumen and brick-stones have been raised by rain water. Locals have expressed their anger and dissatisfaction with the poor condition of the road. They demanded sustainable reforms.

On the surface, it was seen that the carpeting has come up at numerous places in the area of about two kilometers of the road and small and big ditches have been created. After rain, water accumulates in these ditches and creates big holes. Various vehicles including battery-powered autorickshaw-vans, CNG-powered autorickshaws, trucks move with risk. The road is often congested due to the slowness of the vehicles.

Talking to the local people, it is known that due to the lack of drainage system on the road, water freezes even if it rains a little. Many people were injured in the accident. The patient and his relatives have to suffer the most. Apart from this, taking maternity women to the hospital is also an extreme risk.

The CNG driver Rabbi said, while running CNG on the broken road, the nut bolt almost fell off. What we earn in a day is spent on repairs. And the traffic jam continues every day. A 20-25 minute journey takes 40 minutes.

Autorickshaw driver Ishaq said that due to potholes on the road, small and big accidents are happening every day. A few days ago I fell into a pit with a passenger and got injured.

Sixty-year-old Rina Begum said that it is difficult to move on the road. I get pain in the waist and legs. If the road is built, the suffering will be reduced. When asked, Shahana Ferdous, executive engineer of RHD Narayanganj, said that a proposal has been sent to the ministry for construction. If approved, the work will start.
