Oil tanker catches fire again, one dies

A fire broke out on an oil-laden vessel 'MT Banglar Sourav' owned by Bangladesh Shipping Corporation (BSC) at the outer anchorage of Chattogram Port.

One named Sadek Mia (60) died in the incident. He was the son of late Yunus Mia of Langalkot area of Cumilla. He could not be rescued after jumping into the water after the fire.

The fire broke out after an explosion on the ship 'Banglar Sourav' at around 12:50 am on Friday. The Navy, Coast Guard and port authorities brought the fire under control after three hours of effort.

Patenga Police Station Sub-Inspector Nidarshan Barua said, "One person has died in the fire incident on the Sourav ship. Twelve of the 50 crew members on board jumped into the water after the explosion caught fire. Of them, 11 were rescued, but a man named Sadek Mia could not be rescued. He later drowned."

Kafil Uddin, Mobilizing Officer of Chattogram Divisional Fire Service and Civil Defence, said, "We received a call from emergency service 999 and confirmed the fire in the oil tanker. Several panicked sailors jumped into the sea before the rescue team arrived. They were rescued by fishing trawlers, Coast Guard and Navy personnel. A crew member named Sadek died of burns on the ship."
