Outcome of illegal wealth are not good at all : Munir

Mohammad Munir Chowdhury, the Director General (DG) of National Museum of Science and Technology (NMST) expressed that the  to the young BCS officers of various cadres at the Bangladesh Public Administration Training Center in Savar yesterday.

DG said, government office is the arena of corruption, government employees are corrupt - such an idea has become ingrained in the public mind. Because of this, people's respect for cadre service is decreasing. Many young officers are also getting involved in corruption. Corruption is accepted in order to maintain post and chair and to keep the path of future promotion unhindered and thus the administrative system has lost its strength.

If an officer cannot free his office or workplace from the ring of corruption what is the value of being a BCS cadre officer then. Why is it necessary to bear the expenses from contractor, from brickyard, from license, from lease of government assets for entertainment in government office? Why should the district administration bear the cost of entertaining the guests? Every Government Officer/Employee is entitled to TA and DA on Government Travel, the expenses of entertainment shall be borne by it and not from the District Commissioner's Fund.

Decade after decade, the culture of injustice and corruption has spread and now it has become a luxury. Prohibiting bribery is not honesty only if favoritism works towards someone, taking decisions to protect someone's interests, working for special interests and following unjust orders also fall under the level of corruption.

Exoneration of corruption by favoring one's own cadre is also a cognizable crime. No cadre has authority over another cadre; the constitution does not support it. The example of honest leadership and honest personality in front of junior officers is very negligible, as a result of which the discipline of honesty is being eroded, the situation is alarming.

He also said that BCS officials should visit the field and subordinate offices frequently and should eradicate the roots of corruption instead of sitting on the chair. Though honest, due to the weakness, laziness and lack of strong role of the office head, many office subordinates are drowning in corruption. There is no need for such honest but spineless office head whose subordinates taking bribes while the office head is not aware of it.

Even if a senior officer gives an unjust order, a junior officer is not legally bound to obey it. Small corruption leads to big corruption and mischief, transgression is punishable by Almighty Allah. Government officers/employees should learn from recent events about the consequences of any wrongdoing, crime and transgression. The consequences of ill-gotten gains are not good at all. The strength of integrity of young officials should put the current fragile administration on a strong footing.
