People of Sylhet deprive of gas for 67 years

 People of greater Jaintia area, like Jaintapur, Goainghat, Kanaighat and Companyganj deprived of gas and employment at gas field

 

Haripur gas field of Jaintapur upazila of Sylhet has been extracting gas since 1957, but the majority of Jaintia residents who are the host of Haripur gas field have not received gas. For 67 years, Haripur gas field has been supplying gas to various district cities and the capital city of Dhaka. But the people of Jaintapur, Goainghat, Kanighat and Companyganj of Greater Jaintia, which is source of Haripur gas field, are still deprived of gas facilities.

Apart from this, priority is not being given to the jobs of Jaintapur, Goainghat, Kanaighat and Companyganj upazila residents in Haripur gas field. Former Chairman of Goainghat Upazila Parishad Abdul Hakim Chowdhury said that gas was found in Haripur in 1955 from Jaintapur, Goainghat, Kanaighat and Companyganj upazilas of Sylhet district and the first gas extraction started in 1957. At that time Haripur was under Goainghat upazila. Later, during the formation of Jaintapur Upazila, Haripur area was included in Jaintapur Upazila. Since 1957, natural gas fields in the greater Jaintia area have been supplying gas throughout the country.

However, the people of the greater Jaintia area, Jaintapur, Goainghat, Kanaighat and Companyganj, which is filled with natural gas, have been deprived of this facility for 67 years. In addition, the local residents of Greater Jaintia, which is source of natural gas, were not placed in various job opportunities in the Haripur gas field. The people of Jaintapur, Goainghat, Kanaighat and Companyganj upazilas have been constantly organizing human chain, procession meeting, round table meeting and even strike for the gas supply and local employment facility in the above mentioned 4 upazilas but could not get any results. On Sunday, they appeared at the office of the chairman of Bangladesh Oil, Gas and Mineral Resources Corporation (Petrobangla) Janendra Nath Sarkar to get the benefits of gas supply to the homes of the people of Jaintapur, Goainghat, Kanighat and Companyganj in the greater Jaintia area, source of natural gas, and to get the benefits of employment in various positions in the Haripur gas field. Issue a memorandum to take necessary action. Among others who were present during the handing over of the memorandum were Goainghat Upazila BNP General Secretary Md Jasim Uddin, Organizing Secretary Zainal Abedin, Rustampur Union Parishad Chairman and Goainghat Upazila Volunteer Party Member Secretary Shahabuddin Shihab and Upazila Farmers Party Member Secretary Zia Uddin and others.
