Nilganj Railway Station of Kishoreganj Sadar Upazila was closed on July 4, 2011. As a result thousands of people are suffering due to not being able to travel and transport goods. As the railways are losing billions of money in revenue, the doors and windows of the closed stations are also being stolen. On the other hand, the station area has become a haunted house as it has been closed for a long time.
However, the railway authorities say that this situation is caused by various reasons including local train stoppage, station master crisis. It is also not possible to supervise the stations due to lack of required manpower. However, the railway officials said that the initiative will be taken to open the closed stations after the recruitment of manpower. It is known that no train stops at Nilganj railway station of Kishoreganj Sadar Upazila for a long time. Local residents said that no whistle can be heard once in busy station. Not as busy as before. There is silence all around now. They have demanded different times to re-open the Nilganj station. But it didn't work. As the station is closed, all activities including regular signaling, ticket sales, goods booking are closed. Locals also said that the Nilganj railway station was known as a commercially profitable station even before independence.
The people of a large area in the vicinity depend on the station for transportation and transport of agricultural products and other goods. But suddenly on July 4, 2011, the station was closed by withdrawing the manpower. Millions of people in that area have suffered.
Mainkhapan Union Awami League President Abul Kalam Azad said that no work has been done despite the repeated written and oral reports of the then LGRD Minister Syed Ashraful Islam and the local parliament member regarding the reopening of the station. He also said, demand to take immediate steps to start the station. Jalal Uddin, President of Mainkhapan Ward No. 7 Awami League, said, "Nilganj has been a famous area for business since ancient times. But the business of the market collapsed because the train did not stop here. Passengers have to travel a long way to the district town and board the train.
Kamruzzaman Biplob, a former member of Mainkhapan UP, said that the local people have suffered due to the closure of the traditional Nilganj station. So he demanded to start the station quickly.
Station master of Kishoreganj Railway Md Mizanur Rahman said, "The station has been closed due to manpower shortage. The matter has been informed to the higher authorities. The closed station will be operational if new manpower is appointed."
