Due to floods in Kurigram, there has been a huge loss in agriculture. Due to higher water rising in the Brahmaputra, Dharla and Dudhkumar rivers this year, the lower areas were inundated for the last 15 days. Pepper, sesame, sugarcane, cown, banana, sugarcane, ginger, turmeric is completely destroyed.
Cultivation has now become a burden for the common farmer. Common farmers remain out of incentives because of government regulations. As a result they have to struggle a lot to overcome the loss. Still, they have to borrow and replant to feed their families.
According to the information of the Kurigram Agricultural Extension Department, in the current flood time, 38 thousand 980 hectares of land were cultivated. In this, the crops of 4 thousand 989 hectares of land in the flood area were completely destroyed. In this, 6 thousand 334 farmers lost crops worth Tk 105 crore 32 lakh. Although some incentives are provided by the government, the common farmers remain out of these benefits.
Shyamal Chandra of Nayanipara village of Panchgachi union of Kurigram Sadar upazila said that every year we have a seedbed on about 4 acres of land here. This time I also bought 5 kg of seeds and planted it in the land after spending Tk one thousand from Nageshari. All over we have never heard or seen anyone offering incentives in this area.
Palashirani (25) of Nimkushya said that my husband took one and a half bigha of land and built seedbeds by spending Tk 5 thousand on 10 shatak of land. All ended in a flood. What do we do now? Where can I get seeds? No one is looking for us.
In this regard, Sadar Upazila Agriculture Officer Nahida Afrin said that out of 650 hectares of Ropa Amon seedbeds in Sadar Upazila, 86 hectares of seedbeds have been completely destroyed. We have already prepared a list of affected farmers and sent special demands to the ministry. Hope we get seed support soon. If the allegations of not getting incentives are found to be true, we will arrange incentives for them later.
