There are foreign forces behind the unrest in the hills
- Imran Saleh Prince, Joint Secretary General, BNP
With the last few days untoward incidents that create an unstable situation in the hills district including Khagrachari and Rangamati, there are many narratives are coming out. Many political analysts also commented it as geopolitical and foreign forces are behind these incidents.
Meanwhile, a demonstration took place at Dhaka University under the banner of disgruntled students. Four people have been killed and more than 50 injured in clashes between Indigenous-Bangali since last Wednesday. Section 144 is also in force. The hill people are protesting in Khagrachari, Rangamati and Dhaka demanding the withdrawal of the army from the hills and accusing the army of brushfire.
Politicians alleged that peace and order in the country is being disrupted by the hill people as part of an international conspiracy to appease the victory of the blood of the student people.
In this regard, BNP Joint Secretary General Syed Imran Saleh Prince told The Daily Post that there are foreign forces behind the unrest in the hills. As far as we have come to know through party and some intelligence agencies, some foreign forces loyal to Awami League are trying to create unrest in the country in different ways to question the victory of the bloodshed of the students and people. In the meantime, we have come to know from various media that the current prevailing situation in the hills is happening intentionally. We will appeal to the interim government to pay strong attention so that the victory of the students and people is not questioned in any way.
Nagorik Oikya convener Mahmudur Rahman Manna told The Daily Post that conspiracy over the CHT is not a new issue today. It's been going on for a long time. However, the current interim government has dealt with the incident very harshly. The government has taken initiatives to resolve the situation and crisis. Hopefully the long-standing crisis will be resolved gradually.
Amar Bangladesh (AB) Party Joint Member Secretary Barrister Asaduzzaman Fuad told The Daily Post that we condemn the lynching or extrajudicial killings in the hills, no matter which side they belong to. All the killings, including the firing and beating of the procession of the Bengalis, the subsequent riots and the three of the Chakma community, should be tried after a fair investigation. The culprits, whether they are Bengalis or tribals, should be brought to justice.
He added that protecting the basic human rights of the citizens of the country is the main responsibility of the state. We are warning the interim government so that it does not go beyond the priority under any circumstances. The previous government failed to establish stability and long-term peace in the hills. The present government should fulfill the principled need to maintain the integrity and sovereignty of the state of Bangladesh by involving all parties at the community level for a political solution.
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said, "I do not think the Chittagong Hill Tracts incident is an isolated incident. There's a lot involved. Taking advantage of the vacuum on the one hand, the changes that are taking place in geopolitics on the other hand, the surrounding areas centering on Myanmar, on the other hand, the insurgency in Manipur, India, if you bring these events, I think these incidents of geopolitics are very significant."
AF Hassan Ariff, adviser to the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives, told reporters after exchanging views with local political and ethnic leaders and security forces at Rangamati Cantonment yesterday that conspiracy is being hatched from outside to destroy the harmony of Chittagong Hill Tracts, including Rangamati.
Foreign Adviser Md Touhid Hossain has said that the Chittagong Hill Tracts unrest is an internal issue of Bangladesh. We see this as an internal issue and are trying to resolve it. Four advisers are going there today, and they are working to create a peaceful environment through discussions, ensuring that the conflict does not escalate further.
It is to be noted that the incident started in Khagrachari. Mohammad Mamun (30), a Bengali youth, was beaten to death on suspicion of being a thief in Khagrachhari on last Wednesday. Mamun died while undergoing treatment. He is a resident of Khagrachhari Sadar upazila. In protest, the general students of Dighinala Government Degree College called a protest procession at 4 pm on Thursday. When the students started the protest procession at the pre-determined time, the local hill students threw brickbats and chased them with sticks. The general Bengali students who were protesting were dispersed. After that, four people were killed in several incidents. Section 44 was imposed.
