A murder case was filed against Awami League (AL) President Sheikh Hasina eight days after she resigned from the post of Prime Minister and left the country. Two members of the Sheikh Hasina-led cabinet and four senior police officials were also accused in the same case over the killing of a grocer in police firing in the capital's Mohammapur area.
The case was filed with the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Rajesh Chowdhury yesterday. SM Amir Hamza filed the case. The court ordered Mohammadpur Police Station to take the case against seven people, including Sheikh Hasina, as a first information report.
Meanwhile, on the first day of the 'Resistance Week', the anti-discrimination student movement announced to prevent the AL's counter-revolution, the slogans demanding the death penalty of Sheikh Hasina erupted in the Raju Sculpture of TSC and its surrounding areas of the capital.
Who is charged in the murder case?
The then Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is the number one accused in the case. During the movement, she ordered to suppress it with a strong hand, the case alleges. Accused No. 2 Obaidul Quader has ordered to suppress the movement in his speeches to the media at different times. The four accused are- former IGP Abdullah Al Mamun, former DB chief Harun-ur-Rashid, former Dhaka Metropolitan Police commissioner Habibur Rahman and joint commissioner Biplob Kumar Sarker. Former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, the fifth accused in the case, ordered police to open fire on the procession of students and people.
Other unidentified police officers and policemen carried out the killings at the behest of different ministers of the government, according to the case. It also said that the accused killed innocent students and people in different areas of the country including the capital Dhaka. These killings must be tried to establish the rule of law. If the investigation of Abu Sayed's murder is investigated, the names of more unidentified ministers, MPs, senior police officials and policemen will come up.
What complaint says more
The plaintiff of the case is SM Amir Hamza Shatil, a resident of Adabor area. He filed the case seeking justice for the murder of an innocent citizen as a conscious citizen.
It is also alleged in the case that thousands of students and people recently took out processions in the quota reform movement. Those peaceful processions were fired indiscriminately in different parts of the country. Many students were killed and injured.
On July 19, students and people were holding a peaceful procession in the 40 feet area of Basila in Mohammadpur. Police also fired indiscriminately. Local grocer Abu Sayed was shot in the head while crossing the road. He died at the scene.
In the complaint, the plaintiff mentioned that the deceased Sayed was buried at his village home in Boda of Panchagarh. His mother, wife and son live there. That is why they are unable to file a case in Dhaka. That's why he filed this case to establish the rule of law on the basis of conscience.
In the case, the plaintiff also said that former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina repeatedly ordered to suppress the quota reform movement with a firm hand. Under the direction of Obaidul Quader and Asaduzzaman Kamal, the IGP and senior officials opened fire on the procession ordering the subordinate policemen. The accused committed the murder in connivance with each other. Therefore, it needs to be prosecuted.
Death penalty for Sheikh Hasina demanded
On the first day of the 'Resistance Week', the anti-discrimination student movement announced to prevent the AL's counter-revolution, slogans were raised demanding the death penalty for Sheikh Hasina. The protesters gathered at the foot of Raju Sculpture of TSC at 3pm yesterday and chanted the slogan.
Abu Baker Majumder, one of the coordinators of the student movement, announced the 'Resistance Week' program to stay in the field for the next one week with the four-point demand. As part of the program, on the first day, a 'road march' program was held to the places where the protesters were martyred.
Abdul Hannan Masud, one of the coordinators of the anti-discrimination student movement, said, "After fleeing power, AL is now conspiring for counter-coup in various ways. But the student community will resist this conspiracy of the killers.
We will be in the field with various programs throughout the week to resist their conspiracy. We have announced the first day's program. The next day's program will be announced respectively. The protesters' four-point demand is the formation of a special tribunal to ensure the speedy trial of the killings carried out by 'fascist' Sheikh Hasina and her party and government using the fascist structure."
Meanwhile, on August 12, students gathered at the foot of Raju Sculpture on the Dhaka University campus at 4:30 pm. Earlier, the students brought small processions from different halls. The central coordinators of the anti-discrimination student movement were present. Students are protesting across the country demanding that former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina be brought to justice for the murder of students and common people. The anti-discrimination student movement also demanded a ban on student politics in educational institutions. At that time, the students chanted various slogans including trail for Sheikh Hasina.
Crimes against humanity tribunal may be tried
Lawyer Barrister Anik R Haque said that there is scope to try Sheikh Hasina as an accused in the war crimes tribunal for the genocide of hundreds of students and people of the country. Lawyer Ainun Nahar Siddiqa and her lawyer Barrister Anik R Haque, who filed the writ petition seeking directives not to open fire on protesters in front of the Supreme Court Annex Building on Tuesday.
Lawyer Anik R Haque said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who resigned from the post, is now absconding. He said, if we see the law of the International Crimes Tribunal that we have where crimes against humanity are prosecuted. She could also be charged with genocide. If she is found guilty, then an attempt can be made to bring her in.
Anik R Haque also said that not only in the International Crimes Tribunal, it is possible to try everyone including Sheikh Hasina in the High Court if she wants to commit the genocide crimes committed by her associates. Meanwhile, on August 12, students held a rally at DU and demanded the trial of Sheikh Hasina by forming a special tribunal.
