How can we face his unborn child?

Selim did not return home to his 2 months pregnant wife as he was shot infront of BRAC University

Selim Talukder (28) of Mallikpur area of Nalchity upazila, was shot in front of BRAC University on July 18 and breathed his last on July 31 while undergoing treatment in the ICU of Popular Hospital.

On August 1, Selim’s body was taken Nalchity with the death certificate issued by the doctor at night and buried at the family graveyard after Namaz-e-Janaza in the next morning.

Sumi Akhter, a two-month pregnant woman, lost her husband after getting married a year ago. His demand is justice for the killings and employment arrangements by the government.

Selim's wife Sumi Akhter said Selim left his Comillapara residence on central Badda Link Road in the morning on July 18 and joined the movement. When I called him, I realized that he was in the movement. I asked to come home soon, he said that he would come a little later. But my husband Selim did not come.

The deceased wife also said that my husband Selim was stuck in a clash between quota reform protesters in front of BRAC University. He was shot around 11:30 am, later someone took him to Mugda Hospital first. From there, an unknown person called my mother-in-law's mobile number around 12:30 pm. They rushed to the hospital after receiving the news. He was found shot in the head, chest and back. We visited different hospitals but did not find the ICU empty. At the same time, the hospital authorities refused to admit patients fearing administrative harassment. Selim was admitted to the ICU of Popular Hospital in Dhanmondi in search of a helpless hospital. He breathed his last on July 31 while undergoing treatment there. I have seen the pain of my husband's death for 14 days. On the morning of August 1, the doctor gave his death certificate.

Sumi also said, "We got married about a year ago. After completing his graduation from BGME University of Fashion and Technology, he started working as an assistant merchandiser in a private company in Narayanganj. They are three sisters, one brother. Selim was the middle."

Sumi also said in a tearful voice, "The way police killed my husband seems to be planned. I want justice through a fair investigation into the murder of my husband. I can't forget my husband. The age of my unborn child is currently 2 months. If the government provided employment opportunities, it would have been possible to live with the child."

Selim's younger sister Shoma said that the unborn child did not recognize his father, deprived of his father's adoration. We may not have the answer to what we say to him when the child ask me where my father is?

It is to be noted, Selim Talukder was admitted to the hospital 12 hours after being shot during a clash over the quota reform movement. The deceased Selim was the son of Md Sultan Hossain Talukder of Mallikpur village in Nalchity municipality of Jhalakathi.
