Millions marooned as flood situation worsens in north

-150 primary schools in four northern districts

-Water level may continue to rise for 48 hours

 

 

The flood situation is worsening as the water level of the rivers continues to rise in the northern region and new areas are being flooded.

According to the Water Development Board (WDB), the water level of the Brahmaputra River is flowing 59cm above the danger level at Chilmari point and 51cm at Nunkhawa point and 65cm above the danger level at Hatia point yesterday morning.

Meanwhile, the water of Dharla increased at the bridge point and is flowing over the danger level. The Ghaghat and the Brahmaputra are flowing above the danger level in Gaibandha. In Sundarganj, 15 villages have been inundated after the Teesta flood-controlled embankment breached. On the other hand, the water of Teesta at Kaunia point, Dudhkumar at Pateshwari point and Dharla water at Shimulbari point are flowing slightly below the danger level.

More than 150 primary schools in four northern districts have been declared closed due to floodwaters. New areas are being flooded every day by flood waters. People are suffering a lot as water has entered the chars and low-lying areas along the rivers. Many families live in water as they have no any other options.

Besides, Aman seedbeds, jute and seasonal crop fields have been submerged in flood waters. The communication system has collapsed due to the submergence of unpaved roads. In this situation, the suffering of the residents of the northern has increased.

Jahurul Islam, a resident of Porar Char of Jatrapur union of Sadar, said the water of the Brahmaputra is flowing around the house. I'm worried about the cattle.

Motiar Rahman of Musar Char of Begumganj union said, "Every house in my char has been submerged. Some are in boats, some are in high places. Everyone here is suffering."

Mahbub Rahman, chief engineer of the WDB (North), said the water level of the Brahmaputra and other rivers flowing over the four northern districts may continue to rise for another 48 hours. The water of the Brahmaputra is flowing over the danger level at three points. The water of other rivers is below the danger level. 

Rangpur Divisional Commissioner Zakir Hossain said so far 273 tons of rice and Tk 16 lakh have been allocated for distribution in 15 upazilas for the flood victims. There are 2,600 tons of rice and Tk 60 lakh in stock which will be distributed in phases.
