  • Mistakes in textbooks, controversy-criticism

  • Low-quality books, six months over to get hands

  • New curriculum starts in nominal training

  • Parents' dissatisfaction with the curriculum

If we go to pre-planned work like developed countries, we will have no work : Prof. Md. Farhadul Islam, Chairman, NCTB

The National Curriculum and Textbook Board (NCTB) is responsible for the formulation of the National Curriculum and Textbooks. After a long period of scrutiny and review, the government has formulated a new curriculum this year. But even then, the debate-criticism is not leaving behind the curriculum.

NCTB, the responsible organization, could not show responsibility in every position in implementing experiential education. At the beginning of the year, there was criticism and debate about books and teacher training. The organization has to face criticism for poor quality books and mistakes in textbooks. Students suffer from teachers' nominal online training. The parents said that there was no study in the school. They are complaining about destroying the future of their children.

There was a debate about the syllabus. In the face of controversy, NCTB published more than 450 amendments to the textbook. Criticism has been made about the quality of textbook paper. Books did not reach all the students in the book festival. Months passed with two to three books. It took six months for all the books to reach all the students. The organization has the same situation in the evaluation process. NCTB has passed the 10th month of the year in the launch of apps for the modified assessment of curriculum. Although NCTB considers itself successful in implementing the curriculum. However, regarding the mistakes of various activities, the chairman of the organization said that if you plan to do any work, it will not be possible to implement that work. It is known that different types of piloting were done from 2018 to 2022 to implement experience-based education by radically changing the country's education system.

After the five-year plan and planning, the new curriculum was implemented in three classes in January this year. Training of teachers was the most important task before implementing the curriculum. A budget of around 200 crore was also formulated to implement the training program. However, the implementation of the new curriculum began with one hour of online training for 420,000 teachers.

Although direct training was rumored several times in January, it did not materialize later.

Lack of training programs for teachers has an impact on students. What will you teach? How to teach? Most of the teachers have spent years to understand this. As a result, a negative mindset has been created between students and parents. Most of the parents have complained that their children are not getting any education. Among them, they also went on several rounds of agitation due to the fear of the future of their children and the destruction of the education system.

10 months over to get evaluation apps:

Changes in assessment methods to reduce disparity among students and build self-confidence. Instead of number-based evaluation, triangle, circle, and quadrilateral evaluation methods are introduced.  Students will be assessed throughout the year. However, on November 8, the assessment craft apps were launched. As a result, there was confusion regarding the evaluation of students in many institutions.

Mistakes in textbooks, controversy-criticism:

There has been controversy and criticism about the books of classes six and seven in the new curriculum. In the face of controversy, NCTB has given more than 450 amendments. After that, there was a debate throughout the year on the issue of textbooks. Intellectuals have criticized the book on livelihood, art and culture, and health protection. They are in favor of de-prioritizing such optional subjects by reducing mathematics and science education. Conservatives have also criticized the book's themes. Like those who advocate not adding sex education to teenagers. Islamists have criticized Darwin's rejection of evolution.

low quality books, take six months to get your hands on:

Like every time, not all students receive books on the first day of the year. According to the Printing Industry Association, 50 to 60 percent of primary and 20 to 30 percent of secondary books were not printed in January. Students this time did not get all the books according to their syllabus. Only one or two books of the entire set are given away at book festivals. In the textbook distribution program of Bangladesh, questions have been raised about the number of books given at the primary and secondary levels and the quality of the books. Again, due to a lack of supply of books, book festival was not held in some educational institutions. Chairman of NCTB Professor Farhadul Islam said that we are a third-world country. Like developed countries, no work in our country can be done according to pre-plan. We have many constraints including our budget. If we haphazardly do everything, we will not be able to complete the work properly.

Talking about the success of NCTB, he said, we have been successful to a large extent in implementing the new curriculum. Although some criticisms have been made, this will not be the case in the future. We have already developed assessment apps. Through this, we will be able to connect the companies with EIN and without EIN all over the country. About the books, the NCTB chairman said, this time we have already sent primary and sixth-seventh books. As the books of eighth and ninth are the new curriculum books, we are a bit behind. This time the quality of the book will be good.
