The interim government has taken steps for treatment of these injured student and mass. But some are deprived of that too. According to the official list of the district civil surgeon, the number of injured in the anti-discrimination movement in Faridpur is 90. Some of them were shot, some were injured by rubber bullets, some were injured by sound grenades, and some had broken arms and legs. Many had injuries to their eyes. Their fingers and toes were broken. Although many of them have recovered after receiving treatment, Sajib Islam Sunny (23) and Sajid Mondal (20) have not fully recovered yet. One of them is currently receiving treatment at the CRP in Dhaka and the other at home. However, they have not yet received any financial assistance from the government.
Sajib Islam Sunny is a fourth-year honors student in the chemistry department at Government Rajendra College in Faridpur. His father, Abdul Malek, was a mason by profession. He lives with his widowed mother and a younger sister in the city's Baitul Aman area. The elder sister is married. The younger sister is a student at Faridpur Commercial College. Sunny joined the anti-discrimination student movement procession that started in front of Faridpur Medical College Hospital on the morning of August 4. He was attacked with sound grenades and tear gas when he reached Thana Road. When he went to the benevolent school for self-defense, Sunny was attacked by Chhatra League and Jubo League.
In addition to the bruises all over his body, he also had a broken right hand. He was sent to CMH in Dhaka for advanced treatment from Faridpur Medical. A rod was inserted in his hand after surgery, but his wrist no longer works. In addition to the broken bones, his nerves were damaged. He was admitted to CRP in Savar on November 16 and is receiving treatment. He is receiving this treatment here free of charge. Contacting the Social Services Department of Faridpur Medical College Hospital, it was learned that a list of about 60 people has been sent from Faridpur. Nothing has been reported from Dhaka yet.
However, there were many more among the injured. It was not possible to send their names as they could not be contacted. Sajib Islam Sunny said that he used to pay for his studies by tutoring and also run his family. Now he himself is at the mercy of others. The illness of this sole earner of the family is causing great suffering to the entire family. Sajib Islam Sunny said that after getting injured, he had to cover the hospital treatment expenses himself. Later, during the hand operation, the hospital provided him with various tests and examinations free of cost. For which the maximum cost was Tk one and a half thousand.
However, he had to pay for the rods, screws and other medicines. His name is listed at number 32 in the list of the Faridpur Civil Surgeon's Office. The injured Sunny was given Tk 5 thousand financial assistance by the Faridpur Chhatra Shibir two weeks ago. Sajib Islam Sunny is the most seriously injured student among those injured in the anti-discrimination movement in Faridpur. His financial condition is not good. However, Sajib has not yet received any help from the government.
Sajid Mandal (20), son of another day laborer, father Jahangir Mandal, from Koijuri village, next to Bismillah Shah Dargah in the city, is a first-year student of Faridpur Polytechnic Institute. They are two sisters and one brother.
On August 4, while running towards East Khabaspur after being chased by the police during an anti-discrimination movement, he and another boy named Lamim were beaten up and severely injured behind the Hitashi School. He underwent treatment at Faridpur Medical College Hospital. His right finger, the middle of his left hand, and the middle of his right foot from the ankle to the ankle were broken. The hospital inserted a rod. After being discharged from the hospital, he is now at home. After 3 to 4 months, he will have to go to the hospital to unscrew the rod. After a year, he will have to undergo a major operation.
Sajid is now going home from the hospital for treatment. His condition has become very miserable. The medical expenses are not being met. How will he get food? Sajid, a victim of malnutrition, has lost his bones. Apart from some financial support from Jamaat-e-Islami, they are keeping a close eye on him. The party has also provided him with some more financial support from a private organization. However, Sajib has not received any government assistance so far.
On August 4, Sajib and a few others were beaten up by Jubo League and Chhatra League activists and supporters behind the Hitaishi School. Among them was Lamim Islam (20), son of journalist KM Rubel, who died of COVID-19. His home is also in Baitul Aman. Lamim, a first-year student at Faridpur Polytechnic Institute, joined the August 4 procession with his cousin from in front of Faridpur Medical College.
Lamim Islam said that on August 4 at 10 am, he and his cousin Nurjahan joined the anti-discrimination movement procession that started from in front of the Medical College Hospital in West Khabaspur of the city. Then, they went through the broken road junction and went to the Faridpur Press Club area, passing in front of the Awami League office in Alipur. From there, they reached Bari Plaza Market on Thana Road, in front of Sarada Sundari College, and were trapped by a police barricade. At that time, the police fired tear gas shells, injure Lamim.
While another friend of his, Sajid, and a few others were going towards East Khabaspur, a tear gas shell hit him in the face. Then, while they were running through the alley of the Hitashi School for self-defense, they were attacked by Jubo League and Chhatra League. They tied their faces and beat them severely and broke their hands and legs. Lamim also said that on August 26, he was admitted to FOMEC Hospital again and underwent surgery for a broken hand and a rod was inserted. He was discharged from the hospital on September 7 and went home. He will have to wear the rod like this for about a year. Then, he may have to undergo another operation to remove the rod after understanding the situation.
Abrar Nadim Itu, leader of the Faridpur anti-discrimination student movement, said in this regard, "We have not received any kind of help or support from the central level for those injured in the movement in Faridpur. We have helped about 9 students by collecting money at the personal level. Apart from this, we have collected some money for a student named Ayan by posting on Facebook. But we could not do anything for them. The government should resolve their issue quickly." SM Ali Ahsan, deputy director of the District Social Services Office, said, "The Social Services Department of Faridpur Medical College Hospital is preparing a list of those injured in the anti-discrimination movement."
